Performing Arts

“Spontaneity, Originality and Imagination”

Taught in our purpose-built, versatile Performing Arts Centre, Beaudesert has a thriving Performing Arts Department. Lessons place an equally strong emphasis on creating theatre and performing. Years 3 to 5 children receive Drama and Dance lessons on a carousel basis, whilst children in Years 6 and 7 children receive lessons once a fortnight through the year.

The varied curriculum offers all children a broad experience of theatre, covering topics such as musical theatre, dance inspired by the Ballet Rambert, Commedia dell’Arte, mime, mask, stage combat and film making. Children develop the key skills of imaginationinteractionempathycommunicationlanguageconcentration and understanding through their practical involvement.

Productions

In addition to timetabled lessons, all children undertake productions annually as follows:

Year 3 A production in the Summer Term.
Year 4 A play performed per form, per term.
Year 5  “Play in a Day” led by a visiting practitioner, rehearsed and performed in just a day during the Spring Term.
Year 6 A two-week project, culminating in a production in the Summer Term.
Year 7 A week-long performance arts project at the end of the Spring Term.
Year 8 A large production at the end of the Autumn Term which is quite often a musical.

This diverse programme offers all children the opportunity to generate exciting theatre in a variety of ways, taking part in productions both on and backstage. Children assist with the technical elements of production too with our accessible lighting and sound boards. Productions are also supported by our resident wardrobe mistress.
