Hip Hop Above and Beyond Morning

Children in Years 5 to 8 were grinning from ear to ear after their hip hop themed 'Above and Beyond' morning on Saturday.

The morning began with a workshop from our guest speaker and poet, Kimba, who spoke to the children about what poetry means to him and how they can use their imaginations to write their own poems. He tested them on the vital components of poetry; SHAMPOO (similes, hyperbole, alliteration, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia and oxymorons), and punctuated his talk with poetic performances that had the children in stitches of laughter, as well as gasps of admiration.

Next, the children dispersed in different directions to take part in various hip hop themed workshops.

Our Years 6 and 8 children split their time between in-depth poetry workshops with Kimba, and creating graffiti inspired designs to print onto to t-shirts.

Year 7 spent time with Mr Jones learning about the history of rap and hip hop culture in the United States, before writing and performing their own raps in groups.

Meanwhile, the Dining Room was used as an impromptu studio as our Year 5 children produced striking pieces of artwork inspired by famous graffiti artists.

We hope all of the children took something special away from the morning.

Our Above and Beyond programme takes place roughly once a term on a Saturday morning, where our Prep School children are given the opportunity to learn ‘above and beyond’ a certain topic. Previously, this has included a morning with wildlife expert Mike Dilger, workshops on resilience with public speaker Bart Gee and a morning with Masterchef finalist Andrew Kojima.
